‘Big Brother Australia’ seemingly canceled after low-rated season

BB AUWhile we are not a regular “Big Brother Australia” viewer, it is always sad to see a version of the show fall somewhere in the world. The Australian version is one of the longest-running ones, as well, with it going for a good seven years after it premiered in 2001, and then it being revived a few years ago on a new network in Nine.

However, that network has seemingly taken down most mentions of the show, and per local publication Herald Sun, there are no plans to commission another version of the show in the near future. The ratings weren’t great for this past season, and given that this show is such a time commitment, we understand why it is tough to program (even if it does do well in so many other countries).

To international fans, this must be a disappoint since both “Big Brother Australia” and “Big Brother UK” do have many viewers in North America. Unfortunately, there are few means for these viewers to watch legally. If there was a way in which Australia could monetize this (like allowing viewers to personally license the series for a small amount of money), it would be a way to inject more money to a series. This is something that we wish the Canadian version of the show would do especially, given the American fans who do want to watch it and the feeds without some sort of elaborate workaround.

Unfortunately, the age of great Australian reality television may just be over for now. “The Amazing Race Australia” has been very quiet on if they will have a fourth season coming up in the future, while “The Mole Australia,” which lasted longer than most other versions, seems to also be no more. The irony here is that as of last year, they still had “Beauty and the Geek,” which was canceled in America after our season back in 2008.
