‘The Fosters’ season 3 spoilers: Why is Callie so surprised?

“The Fosters” took a strange hiatus from ABC Family last week, but come Monday the show returns with “Daughters,” an episode that seems to be very important for two characters in particular: Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Rita (Rosie O’Donnell). The network has promoted Rosie’s work more than usual the past few days, which has us thinking that this is a much more important episode for her character than some others that she has appeared in.

There are some reasons why Rosie would be taking center stage in this story. First of all, it’s possible that Callie is staying at Girls United at the moment as her adoption situation starts to sort itself out. Some of Brandon’s past came back to bite the entire family on this past episode, and could make it so much harder for Callie to secure a permanent home.

Also, we’ve seen from some promotional material for “Daughters” that Rita has a surprise that is going to cause a reaction from Callie, which seems to be what the photo above indicates. What is it? We don’t want to spoil it completely, but it could cause Callie to start to understand Rita more, and maybe even look at her in a slightly different light.

There are three episodes left of “The Fosters” this summer, and we do wonder if the show, now that Rosie is done with “The View,” could look to make Rosie more of a permanent cast member. We feel like she’s always been an underrated actress and we’d be happy with that. At the same time, though, this show’s all about making sure you can balance out all the characters, and if Callie gets back living with Stef and Lena there may not be a reason to see her beyond a few appearances here and there.
