‘The 100’ season 3 spoilers: Singer / Vine star Shawn Mendes lands role

It is not too often that you see “The 100” make big headlines when it comes to their casting news, so we certainly imagine why they were quick to jump on this latest opportunity when it comes to Shawn Mendes. The singer / Vine personality / all around popular guy these days has scored a role on the upcoming third season, though there are not many details out there beyond that he is a young Ark survivor in a tough position, and according to E! News he may use some of his talents to get his way out of it.

In a statement to the site, showrunner Jason Rothenberg explains that much of how this all came together was a result of Mendes’ own love of the show, and this led to everyone getting involved and figuring out the right part:

“Shawn is a big fan of the show, and reached out to me on Twitter about potentially working together … He’s a very talented artist, and we knew we wanted to do something special and different for the premiere. Shawn gave us a unique opportunity and I can’t wait for our fans to see our collaboration.”

Let us take a minute here to preemptively fire back at some out there who are going to be quick to label this as stunt casting. If Mendes is a fan of the show, how is he any different from anyone else wanting to be on board for a guest spot? Also, this is a show that needs the ratings, and if he can bring more attention to the premiere, it will only help out “The 100” in the long run.
