Fox now looking to remake ‘Urban Cowboy’

Fox -Welcome to Fox, the network where they remake things! Seriously, this is a network that is bringing back “The X-Files,” adapting “Minority Report” and “Fatal Attraction,” and is considering a revival of “Prison Break.” They’ve already done “24: Live Another Day,” and now they are looking at doing a version of the classic “Urban Cowboy” movie from 1990.

It was announced today that Craig Brewer, who was behind the “Footloose” remake a few years ago, is set to be the chief creative voice behind a new pilot for the network. Robert Evans, who was involved in the original, is also on board and said the following in a statement:

“In the 35 years since I made the original Urban Cowboy, country music and the influence of Texas has gone stratospheric … The timing could not be better to continue this story in the television world … And what an ace team of collaborators we have on board to make it happen.”

We do not think that anyone is going to dispute the cultural significance of the original “Urban Cowboy” film, but at the same time were there really any people out there clamoring to see a new version? We’re not entirely sure that there were, which is what makes this move on the part of Fox a little surprising. Then again, this is a network that needs more established hits … though we should remind you that their one breakout of the past year was “Empire,” which was an entirely new concept. Everyone wants a revival or two here or there, but new ideas are what will ultimately rise to the level of being global sensations.
