‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Dr. Evil, Mike Myers, Amy Adams, Kristen Wiig, and Christmas in July

SNL -It’s remarkable that we haven’t done a “Saturday Night Live” re-watch article for the Amy Adams show, but there may be some reasons for that. Since this is the Christmas episode from last year, it really doesn’t need to be replayed that much. Also, the sketches on the night were kind of a mixed bag. It was nice to get a Kristen Wiig cameo and this episode features one of our favorite recurring sketches in the cat adoption clinic, but do you really need to hear all about holiday spirit in the summer?

At least tonight there is some sense to when this repeat is airing, mostly because we have a fun little Christmas-in-July thing going right now on Independence Day. The majority of the sketches on the night do feel either a little dated now (“Serial” was so in that particular moment), or just weren’t that great the first time (the “Office Christmas Party” song). For the record, you can see many of the sketches in our original review for the episode.

With that being said, let’s spend a minute or two talking about the return of Mike Myers as Dr. Evil, which is the featured sketch for this re-watch article. It was a brilliant move to get the character, not really known for “SNL,” on to speak about the Sony hack and North Korea. Is the material a little dated? Sure, but since Dr. Evil is such an iconic movie character and Myers is a former cast member, there is some weight to him being present here.

What this cold open from this past December reminds us of more than anything else is that there is still some weight to getting surprise guest stars for Christmas Specials. This is a tradition that we do hope continues.
