‘Britain’s Got Talent’ review: Alison Jiear, Old Men Grooving, Luca Calo perform in second live show

Britain's Got TalentAfter watching a good two-thirds of the “Britain’s Got Talent” performance show on Tuesday, we realized just how much better this genuinely was than the show that aired before it the first time around. You had a bigger and better array of talent, and we could imagine quite a few people getting at least some votes and therefore a chance at making it through to the next round. Sure, there was a hefty dose of nuttiness, but the series did at least make us wait a little while for some of that to come around.

Take a look below for our quick-take on some of the acts who hit the stage. If you come back later, you can also get our full reaction on some of the results.

Groove Thing – As far as extremely-young dancers go, very talented. However, there is no question to us that Entity Allstars were better last night. They probably still did enough in here to be one of the top five acts from the British public, but we personally still want to something a little bit greater than just “good” (if that even makes sense).

Jules O’Dwyer & Matisse – It’s such a sweet, charming dog act. We’re not entirely sure that there is the intensity here to win the competition, but this is one of the best dog acts that we’ve seen of this variety. What we like about it is that she is coming up with different spins on the classic dog act that we have seen so many times over.

Bonetics – Love what he does. We have seen a few of these bone-breakers on other dance shows over the years, but what really makes him stand out his the musicality. This is more than just a “look what I can do” dancer; he told a story tonight about breaking free and being individual rather than being stuck in some cage.

Revelation Avenue – Amanda Holden’s Golden Buzzer act proved again why they were worthy of it! They actually perform almost better than many of the glee clubs on “Glee” sound, and they have the benefit of recording those songs in the studio. We’ve never loved “Halo” as a song (too sappy), but this is the best version of it that we have heard.

The HoneyBuns – There is nothing bad about the group. Most of them are great singers. However, this dated arrangement and performance feels almost like something like you would see more during a commercial during “The Price Is Right” or some other daytime show.

Michael Late – This was very clever! We thought for a while that we were getting lulled into a false sense of security seeing the same trick done again and again, but the payoff at the end made all the waiting worth it! In the end, just a really fun magic show that had us grinning the entire time.

Luca Calò – One of the oddest performers you will see. We don’t know why he went full Beyonce with this. We’d much rather see his own dance moves if he’s going to be this cheesy-awful singer / dancer rather than just doing someone else’s moves really badly.

Alison Jiear – A talented singer, but was this the right song? To us, it almost felt a little too loud for us, and there was not a whole lot of musicality and emotion that could be felt through all the booming notes. She does have a chance to make it through still to the next phase of the competition, but it’ll be hard given the competition.

Old Men Grooving – Can they still groove? They are a whole lot of fun, but not particularly the best dancers we’ve ever seen in our lives. They seem perfectly suited for some sitcom about cheesy dads who embarrass their children by dancing at the club.
