‘Chicago Fire’ season 3 spoilers: Who is replacing Charlie Barnett’s Mills?

On this past episode of “Chicago Fire” season 3, we were left with what was a pretty massive surprise: Mills is no longer a part of the show. He has exited, at least for the time being, in an effort to be with his family in North Carolina.

The thing about this show is that while there may not be an emotional replacement to Charlie Barnett’s character coming up in the near future, there is going to be someone coming into his spot as medic. You kind of need these new additions so that the team can actually do their job. Coming in the place of Mills now is none other than “Friday Night Lights” alumni Dora Madison Burge, who is going to be playing the part of Jessica “Chili” Chilton. Two quick observations on this name:

1. Yes, it is incredibly ironic that her nickname is also the favorite food of many firehouses out there. Nobody knows how to work a slow-cooker quite like a cameraman.

2. The last name reminds us of “Hannibal” and Raul Esparza’s character. Chili and “Hannibal” is probably not a good mix.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Matt Olmstead comments that the show is not going to ignore the fact that Burge previously played a character on “Chicago PD”:

“[There will be] a little nod toward the fact that her nickname is Chili, because her last name’s Chilton and she has a sister that actually left Chicago to go be with her other sister in Kansas City … It’s worth it to just throw away that she’s the sister of a character we saw once upon a time on P.D. and never go back to it. We’re never going to play twin scenes… I can’t think of anybody better for the role than her.”
