‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 8, episode 19 review: Did Sheldon, Leonard meet George Lucas?

The Big Bang TheoryThe moment that we heard that tonight’s new episode of “The Big Bang Theory” was going to feature Skywalker Ranch, we immediately had one question: Was this going to lead to actually seeing George Lucas on the show? We’ve seen so many big-name guest stars from the geek community, whether it be Billy Dee Williams, LeVar Burton, and of course the always-present Wil Wheaton.

So with this, the biggest problem with Thursday night’s new episode was that we spent the entire night anticipating a Lucas cameo that didn’t happen. Sure, it’s probably our fault more than the show’s, since we built this up as a possibility thanks to their penchant for keeping big secrets, coupled with the fact that there is such a pedigree here for big guest stars. What we had instead was Sheldon and Leonard traveling to the ranch in hopes of getting in while they prepared to give a lecture at nearby Berkeley. Instead, what happened was that the two parties were sent away by security, and then forced to endure sitting inside of a room when Sheldon went postal and tried to run onto the property anyway.

The other story of the episode was plenty funny, even if it boiled down to a competition between Howard and Bernadette about whether or not he could keep the Tardis that he purchased long ago when they moved into their new home / Howard’s old home. She didn’t want to do it, and enlisted a series of champions with bribes to throw it in return for rewards. For Raj, having the Tardis at his place was a good enough bribe. For Amy, the thought of it in her bedroom was appetizing as a way to lure in Sheldon. Didn’t quite work out as she hoped.

Some of the best individual lines tonight included Penny talking about “Game of Thrones,” Sheldon’s terrible Yoda impression, and also listening to the finer details of how Sheldon was tased. While the lack of Lucas was a slight disappointment, the episode found ways to keep us smiling. Grade: B-.
