2015 WGA Awards: ‘The Good Wife,’ ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ among winners

Good Wife -While you wait for the Academy Awards to happen a week from Sunday, awards season is still going strong courtesy of the WGA Awards on Saturday night. There is no group as underrated in the entertainment world as the writers, and we are therefore pleased to see them getting recognized for a variety of their various contributions in the world of entertainment.

So who were the big winners in the TV categories? We’re going to have them for you below, along with a tiny bit of analysis.

Drama Series – “True Detective.” Given the show’s performance elsewhere in awards season, a small surprise. Still much deserved. This show also won an award for New Series to go along with this.

Comedy Series – “Louie.” No surprise here at all. Louis CK is one of the best writers going, and it doesn’t matter if you are talking about his comedy routine or his show. He also won episodic comedy for “So Did the Fat Lady.”

Variety / Talk – “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” Oliver’s writers here include himself alongside Kevin Avery, Tim Carvell, Dan Gurewitch, Geoff Haggerty, Jeff Maurer, Scott Sherman, Will Tracy, Jill Twiss, and Juli Weiner. Very deserved, given the quality work that he has put on HBO.

Episodic Drama – “The Good Wife,” “The Last Call.” Showrunners Robert and Michelle King specifically wrote this episode of the series.

Animation – “The Simpsons,” “Brick Like Me.” Brian Kelley wrote this installment, and this award is just another piece of validation that this remains the premiere animated comedy on network TV. We still continue to stand by that, regardless of how far into the show’s run we are.
