‘Supernatural’ season 10, episode 11 review: Good Charlie, dark Charlie, or no Charlie at all?

Day -Why did Charlie return from Oz? The moment that details were announced for Tuesday’s new “Supernatural” episode, this question popped into our head. Then, this question started to shout in our ear over and over again once we started to see just how Felicia Day’s character returned.

In a twist that felt very “Orphan Black,” Charlie was basically split up into halves: Good Charlie and Dark Charlie. It was almost akin to the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch from the story. Dark Charlie was out for vengeance, and Good Charlie was without any pain in her heart at all. This made for a fun dichotomy as we watched these characters struggle to coexist. Dark Charlie in particular was on a stabbing / threatening spree, and we started to learn about the Wizard, Dorothy, and everything else that happened in that world. Maybe it’s in a better place now? It’s hard to know without being there, but Charlie is moving forward.

Thanks to Sam and Dean, Charlie was able to silence her demons, which in her case was a living manifestation of her pain. After she was cured, Charlie promised Dean that she was going to help him cure his suffering. He still has the Mark, and that longing is still there.

Charlie believes in Dean, and most importantly, Dean is starting to believe in Dean. Charlie departed at episode’s end, and the Winchesters went back to work finding a cure. The main story was not forgotten, and Charlie also was not written out completely. We suspect we’ll see her again at some point in the future, whether it be later this season or early in season 11.

We really loved this episode of “Supernatural.” To be fair, we’ve always been partial to Day as a fan of “The Guild,” so to see her on this show is a combination of two of our favorite things. Even still, she brings that perfect mixture of humor and heart, and that makes every chapter of Charlie’s journey captivating to watch yet again. Grade: A-.
