‘The Mentalist’ season 7 spoilers: Do we have our final Big Bad?
The question in the title is one that we’ve been asking ourselves ever since the final season of “The Mentalist” began, and if there is a flaw in the past several episodes, it is this. The first six seasons had Jane tracking down Red John. Since that point, we’ve been a little more scattered. We feel like the show is at its best when there is a specific overarching villain for Patrick Jane to try to track down.
Luckily, we may have that in “Byzantium,” the eleventh episode of the season. Technically, this may feel almost like a penultimate episode, since the final two are airing back-to-back on one night. For those wondering, this title is keeping the color theme intact, as this is a shade of purple in addition to it having a variety of other meanings. Based on the synopsis below, it looks as though Jane’s adversary is someone who is very similar in some ways to himself:
“A young man claiming to have psychic powers offers his help to the FBI in solving a pair of murders, but when he leads them to additional victims, Jane and the team begin to suspect that he is in fact the killer they’re hunting.”
Let it be known that we have no confirmation at all that this fake-psychic is the big bad, or will be appearing in the final two episodes. It just feels almost like this is the sort of foe that Jane really should be taking on as we near the end of the series’ run. It would be a nice sort of poetry for the show, given that he has been a fake psychic who, for the longest time, used his powers for good.

I would love to see Jane outsmart a faux psychic. I love to watch him match wits with criminals and then nail them in the end because after all Patrick Jane really is the smartest man in the room as it were. I am really really going to miss this show!!
