‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Nicki Minaj, Skylar Grey perform ‘Bed of Lies’

In addition to all of its sketches tonight, “Saturday Night Live” had a musical performance from Nicki Minaj, and we have a feeling that it was probably very different than what most of you were expecting going into this weekend’s show.

“Bed of Lies” is the latest single from the rapper, but it was not the same sort of fun, dance-worthy hip-hop / pop track that we’ve heard from her over the years. This is instead an emotional song with a story behind it, and there is some serious darkness in the lyrics. She was joined on the stage by Skylar Grey, who has collaborated with a ton of artists over the years. Heck, we remember here when she was performing as Holly Brook a long time ago.

It’s a great song! It may be our favorite one that Nicki has ever recorded.

As for the second song, “All Things Go” may actually be an even more personal song than the first one, at least when she talks about her life, and some of the things that she has been for. Musically, this song did not have the sort of melodic sensibility that we had from the first performance, and that may have been sad for some out there. However, at the same time there was a whole lot to like in here if you are into this sort of music.

Ultimately, Nicki’s performances are probably polarizing. If you didn’t like her before the show tonight, you probably don’t like her still. However, diehard fans probably really enjoyed this very much.
