‘Girls’ season 4 poster: Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, and a new tagline
We know that there is one thing that can be said pretty definitively about most of the characters on HBO’s “Girls,” and that is that they all still have to figure some stuff out in their lives.
With that in mind, we suppose that the new poster released today by HBO is certainly appropriate … and it is probably 80% of a really good marketing device. What the poster does very well comes via that slogan “nowhere to grow but up.” Frankly, it’s fantastic, and it really carves out what the story for these people is going to be and how childish they still are in so many ways. The large font for the show’s title also still works, and we dig the prominence of the premiere date and time (especially since the show aired an hour later this past season).
Our only problems with the poster are as such: We don’t know what the characters are really looking at, and we also don’t feel like Shoshanna or Jessa really look like their characters on the show. We’re not getting into any shenanigans or accusing anyone of PhotoShop; instead, it’s simply a matter that you are taking away some of the characters’ most-distinctive features by having them face in this profile: Their hair, and their outfits. These are two who have a great style, and this image does not make that clear at all.
Meanwhile, we do very much disagree when it comes Hannah and Marnie. Both Lena Dunham and Allison Williams each have presented themselves very well here. We’re just not sure if we like that this poster seems to give some sort of pecking order to the characters on the show; intentional or not, it will be read that way.
