ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 4 spoilers: Tony Goldwyn on hope for Olivia, Fitz

Throughout the past few episodes of “Scandal” this season, there has been a single, solitary question that has really motivated Fitz through many of his actions: Is there hope for himself and Olivia Pope to be together? While they haven’t been together, and while Fitz has been dealing with the many stages of Mellie, that thought has still been there. Olivia mentioned to Jake that the ideal of Vermont is still very much in her head.

Now, though, the situation for Fitz and everyone else has changed in that Olivia has been kidnapped, and seemingly as a large plot orchestrated in part by his very own Vice-President Andrew as a way to ensure that a declaration of war could happen. It’s the worst kind of threat, taking away one of the feel people who really keeps the President sane.

Is it possible that he will declare war just to get Olivia back? We are at least not ruling it out, and speaking to TV Guide in an all-new interview, series star Tony Goldwyn gives us no reason to doubt that the ideals of a future are things that are gone from his character’s brain at all:

“Of course. I do believe it. I don’t know if anyone else does, but I do. He would never give up on the fantasy; that’s what keeps him alive. He is absolutely resolute in his certainty that if they’re given that chance, they would have a great, healthy relationship. He may live in a fantasy world, but he truly believes that he and Olivia are the answer for one another no matter what. If they can just do that, he thinks everything else can sort itself out, but circumstances and Olivia herself have conspired against him. She has turned away from him multiple times now. Olivia wants it all! She wants to have her cake and eat it too!”

We are going to get a better chance to see more news about this moving into January, since that is how long we’re going to be waiting to see a little more of the show. We do feel like these two are part of the very essence of this series at this point, and it is thanks to that Shonda Rhimes and the rest of her team are never going to be able to fully distance herself from the pair.
