‘The Walking Dead’ season 5 spoilers: Andrew Lincoln on Rick’s choice with Glenn, Maggie

Rick -Why in the world did Rick Grimes let Glenn and Maggie leave with Abraham’s company on “The Walking Dead” this past episode? There are actually more questions that we have than what we can hope to answer here, mostly because we still have a very difficult time buying that Beth’s sister is going to take off to Washington without being a part of the company responsible for saving her.

Anyway, there are other times to spend discussing that issue. Instead, let’s look at this from Rick’s point of view. Speaking to TV Guide, even Andrew Lincoln acknowledges that his character may be making a little bit of mistake in allowing some of his core group to be split up:

“We’ve always realized that there’s strength in numbers … You have to [stick together], particularly if you’re on the road again and very exposed. We are both those things — we’re reeling at the moment.”

At the same time, though, Lincoln also acknowledges that Abraham’s goal with Eugene is something that really should be focused on here and celebrated, largely because it provides a sense of hope for all of these characters to actually get out of this apocalypse alive at some point:

“He’s doing everything in his powers to keep everybody going forward, until we find something safe to hold onto, which is one of the reasons why he goes along with the D.C. plan … People need a horizon. When they’re distressed and in fear of their lives, people need something to look to.”

Here’s the problem for the show: How do you give hope, while at the same time drag the story on? If Eugene’s plan goes off without a hitch, then there is not really a show anymore. The story instead becomes more about just watching people build a new world, and we already have “Utopia” for that. (Kidding!)
