‘Gotham’ spoilers: ‘Firefly,’ ‘Homeland’ alum Morena Baccarin scores big role

Now that Fox knows that they have a reasonably success story on their hands with “Gotham,” they are doing just about everything that they can to secure some further interesting faces on the show.

The last example of this very thing comes via Morena Baccarin. According to Deadline, the former “Firefly” and “Homeland” star will recur on the first season of the show as Dr. Leslie Thompkins, a comic-book character who was a close friend of Thomas and Martha Wayne. She is connected to the Arkham Asylum as she tries to help those who need her the most, and she also becomes a mother figure to a young Bruce Wayne through most of his most important years in his development.

In the likely event that “Gotham” is renewed for a second season (it is the best thing Fox has going for it right now), you can probably expect to see Morena promoted to series regular for this role. In a way, this move is similar to Harvey Bullock in that comic fans are probably at least reasonably familiar with the part, but not everyone who strictly watches the movies would be. It’s also a nice move to continue roping in some of the nicer characters within this world, and not just using the big “Gotham villains” to sell your show and ultimately including them all a little too early.

Baccarin’s credits also include “V,” and she will have a guest-starring role on “The Mentalist” when that series returns to CBS early next year.
