MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 4, episode 16 review: A Jenna, Owen, and Tamara love triangle
Tonight’s new episode of “Awkward” contained all sorts of comedy, but there was also a fair slice of discomfort to go along with it.
We begin here with the release of the Dude Database, which spread like wildfire across the internet the moment that Tamra and Jenna put it online. This completely eviscerated the reputations of many people, including Matty, who actually had to work in order to make a date work rather than have it come to him naturally. Meanwhile, Jake had a reputation of being too nice, and he wanted to fight that for some reason.
As for Owen, this actually paid him a compliment … but in a very bizarre manner. Jenna learned that Owen and Tamara had hooked up after she did, which turned into a big thing since she never told her best friend about it. She was basically in the wrong here, but ended up making things worse by acting like she was good for a sophomore, while Tamara wasn’t.
Most of the best moments tonight came courtesy of Sadie, who was in classic form when Matty invited her and Sergio on a double date with him and Gabby … which he was terrible at. Also, she worked to humiliate Val later, which is always fun.
In the end, not even Owen was not that upset over all of this. He was actually happy that his reputation was improved so much by it. Everything in this episode was starting to come up roses by the end … until Jenna deleted the entire database, and almost everyone at the school found out she was responsible for it. Classic. Grade: B+.

The show sucks. The new writers have ruined the show. After watching since episode 1, I find it harder to watch each week.

I totally disagree that Jenna was in the wrong with this “love triangle”. First of all, Tamara had no right to be upset that Jenna didn’t tell her about Owen. There were reasons why Jenna wanted to keep the Owen thing to herself and she is completely justified in them. Putting myself in Tamara’s shoes, in order to be a good best friend, I wouldn’t act like a major b**** and blow up about it. If I found out that my best friend slept with a guy I liked and had slept with, yeah, I would be shocked. But it’s not like I can be pissed since she did sleep with him before I did. And I wouldn’t be pissed – maybe a little disappointed – that she kept it from me because I know that she has a good reason why she did, without her ever telling me why, simply because she is my best friend.
Now, I do agree that Jenna said some things she shouldn’t have to Owen afterward. This is one of the things I hate about Jenna: she doesn’t think things through, automatically thinks the first thought she has about a situation is right, and therefore leaps right into it without thinking. If she were more open-minded and rational about things, she would have gone to Owen and asked him why exactly he hooked up with Tamara after hooking up with her when he knows they are best friends and it could cause a problem. If she wanted to be sure he got the picture, she could make it clear to him that if – and that is the key word: IF – he did hook up with Tamara to get back at or hurt Jenna, he needed to cut it out immediately.
But what made me turn against Tamara – I was literally yelling “b****!” at the screen every time she appeared during this episode – was how awful she treated Jenna when Jenna was trying to apologize. She had no reason to be pissed at Jenna and, even if she felt pissed off, it’s seriously backstabbing to disregard your best friend’s apology. Jenna realized she’d made a mistake – by hurting Tamara, hopefully, and not by keeping Owen a secret – and was not only openly admitting that, but trying to make up for it.
This whole episode has made me think back and wonder if the writers of Awkward. are seriously trying to make people hate Tamara. Looking back at past episodes, it is clear that Tamara isn’t really a good BFF or simply friend. She’s turned her back on Jenna when Jenna needed her most – something a friend never does – dated Jenna’s ex – has she ever heard of girl code?! – and always puts herself in front of Jenna.
And that is probably the worst thing about Tamara. This episode’s fight was, according to Tamara, about Jenna “putting herself in front of Tamara all the time”. Puh-lease!
I’ve been liking Jenna less and less as the show goes on (mostly because it seems like the more we see of her, the more her stupidity shows), but I am SO on Team Jenna rather than Team Tamara.
