‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 spoilers: First flashback tentatively coming in premiere

Game of Thrones -While “Game of Thrones” has utilized a number of interesting narrative techniques in order to better tell its story, there is one that they have routinely avoided for one reason or another: Flashbacks.

To a certain extent, we do understand the reluctance to go here. After all, there is so much going on in the present, it somewhat takes away the need to spend a good bit of time dwelling on anything taking place in the past.

However, a new report from Entertainment Weekly confirms that such a scene is coming, and at the moment will serve as the opening scene of the season 5 premiere. There are many reasons that we could see the show going back in time, whether it is to further introduce some new characters, or show off a certain part of the mythology that will be critical to what happens pushing forward the rest of the way. Given that they managed to avoid this device for the past four seasons, we figure that they would not release it now unless it was 120% critical to the story.

While “Game of Thrones” of course is keeping most of the story right now under wraps, we can at least tell you that Dorne will be an enormous part of the story, and the show is moving away from some selected Starks more than ever. Rickon will once again not be a part of the story, while we have seen conflicting reports regarding whether or not Bran will have any real focus at all.

There is no premiere date yet for “Game of Thrones” season 5, but we firmly expect it to be starting up at some point in late March / early April. We’ll have more soon.

For now, just be sure to speculate away below on what you think this particular scene will be. Also, sign up now to score some further TV updates on all we cover via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo via HBO.)
