‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Hozier performs ‘Take Me to Church,’ ‘Angel of Small Death’

SNL -Tonight, we felt for Hozier. The Irish singer / musician was relatively unknown to Americans upon coming on “Saturday Night Live,” and he had the challenge of coming on during a show hosted by Bill Hader, one of the best performers in the past few decades of its existence.

During this performance, there was a good chance that most would just want to see the musical guest get off the stage, just so that we could get to some more music. Luckily, that didn’t happen here at all. Hozier was interesting, and his energy was such that he was a welcome change. He made us actually take a moment and distract us from Hader coming up, and we weren’t sure anyone could do that.

“Take Me to Church” – We had never heard this song before Hozier performed it; we didn’t even know anything about him other than what we saw online. Still, this was a powerful, intriguing song that reminded us of the old, great singer-songwriters. This guy could be a force in the indie rock world.

“Angel of Small Death” – Like with the first song, we’re not that familiar with this song. Still, we enjoyed almost every note of it. We liked the folk sound of it, and it was once again a nice way to take a breath in between laughing so much at all of the laughter on the show.

We wish that this was the sort of music that we had on the show every week. We’re not sure to think yet about Iggy Azalea coming on next week; she has some hits, but we’re not sure we’ll get the same soul from her music.
