‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: Shonda Rhimes unsure of Callie, Arizona’s future
Just as you would expect on “Grey’s Anatomy,” relationships will be in danger almost within every episode. With Meredith and Derek, you are going to see the two struggle with almost everything from where they want to live to how they want to work.
As for Callie and Arizona, in the early going it may appear almost as though the two are going in the right direction. They are thinking about moving forward with a surrogate, and despite their long road and cheating issues last year, they at least seem to be happy … with the key word here being “seem.” Over the course of the season, these layers will start to unravel somewhat, and we will learn in here that they may be putting on a front to hide some of their deeper issues.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, executive producer Shonda Rhimes made it clear that she has not made up her mind just yet what the ultimate fate of this couple will be:
“I’ll be honest with you and say that there is literally a 50/50 chance that they’ll be together or apart, and I have not figured it out yet … That is the other big storyline of the season for us. We really spent a lot of time in the writers’ room mapping it out and talking about it. There are two parallel relationships: Meredith and Derek’s relationship and Callie and Arizona’s relationship. Meredith’s journey and Callie’s journey are two big journeys that we really want to look at this season as we’re telling these stories.”
Do we want Callie and Arizona together at the end? Definitely, but the real moment that the series has to work at is making sure that their relationship is earned, and not just handed to them for the sake of making fans happy. The reason Owen and Cristina didn’t work is because they wanted different things; we feel like Jessica Capshaw and Sara Ramirez’s characters are more on the same page, but they also have a great deal of baggage.
