‘True Blood’ season 7, episode 9 review: Did Bill Compton die … for Sookie?

We understand right now that not everyone is going to love the direction that “True Blood” is going in for its series finale, and this is probably especially true for those out there who love the idea of Jason and Jessica together.

We have to say, though, that we actually did like the idea of Jessica with Hoyt as endgame, mostly because they were the couple in a real relationship for a larger chunk of the series. The two are in a different place now, mostly because she has experience the necessary growth emotionally.

We saw that sort of growth almost through the entire episode. We saw Eric especially change things up as he did a favor for Bill in bringing Sookie closer to him again, after he claimed that he wanted to take his own life via not taking the cure. He didn’t try to take Sookie away. Also, he let Ginger have sex with him after she’d waited to be with him since the beginning of time. This was a strange but yet somehow rather sweet moment, which was completely ruined by Pam getting captured by Mr. Gus after Eric led to him. Sookie now has one more challenge: The yakuza. We’ve never liked Gus as the villain for the final season, and that part of this was a bummer.

Other than Gus, the rest of the episode was very strong, in between James and Jessica getting closure, Sam seemingly heading off with Nicole (we’ll see if that actually happens), and just the individual character moments with Andy and some of the other longtime characters.

We definitely care more about “True Blood” right now than we have in a long time, so let’s hope that this goes a little better than “Dexter” or “How I Met Your Mother” in the end. Grade: a-.
