‘Call the Midwife’ season 4 spoilers: Laura Main on Jessica Rain’s exit, new story

“Call the Midwife” season 4 is still many months away from premiering on BBC One, but why wait when it comes to sharing some scoop? We have at least some of the first details right now about the story courtesy of someone who was very much a big part of the end of season 3: Laura Main, who plays the part of Shelagh.

After and extended struggle for the character and Dr. Turner to adopt, they finally succeeded in the closing minutes. Based on what Main tells Radio Times, this is going to be starting a good foundation for the two of them and their family moving forward:

“It’s really nice actually. We saw at the end of series three that there was happiness and that is continuing.

“It became quite all-encompassing, this desire for a family. It wasn’t the happy start to married life they’d hoped for – and adding to that, Shelagh still had a bit of guilt about leaving behind a certain life. But we’re over that now. She’s got what she hoped for and she’s now happily integrated back into that world again. They’ve got a wonderful family unit – Timothy and baby Angela – so things are really very good for them.”

Who knows? It is certainly possible / very likely that things will change for the two eventually (they always do on drama series), but a little bit of happiness for the time being is indeed pretty nice.

Main also said that the cast misses having Jessica Raine around after her stunning departure at the end of season 3, but that they have also recruited some great actresses that have filled in well.

Hopefully, the series will remain strong, at least to withstand the criticism of the idea of the show moving beyond the writings of Jennifer Worth.
