‘America’s Got Talent’ finale will serve as launching pad for NBC’s ‘The Mysteries of Laura’

The full review -We have to admit that when we first heard about “The Mysteries of Laura,” an NBC series about a New York homicide detective with a crazy personal life, the quick thought that we had was “here we go again.” It’s the same premise that exists for at least one new show a year, and despite a little bit of star power in Debra Messing, we were not altogether confident that this was going to make it past a few episodes on the air.

Well, it not may have a little more of a chance than it once did thanks to a brand-new scheduling swap. Rather than airing the series premiere of the show on Wednesday, September 24 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, NBC announced today that they will air the premiere a week prior on September 17, following the finale of “America’s Got Talent.”

What does this mean? The family audience for the talent show should carry in well to “The Mysteries of Laura,” and we expect solid numbers for the premiere when we otherwise would be nervous. The real test will come in the following week. NBC has done things like this before with launching shows after popular series and the Olympics, but it does not guarantee great numbers in the long-term. That is based more on quality and retention. For example, the Matthew Perry show “Go On” had a huge launch a couple of years ago after the London Olympics, but was canceled by the end of the season. This show will have to prove itself in order to change that fate.
