‘Mistresses’ season 2, episode 1 review: Did Savi choose Harry or Dominic?

MistressesIt has been a long wait wondering what happened to Savi, Joss, April and Karen on “Mistresses” and with some big cliffhangers dangling in the wind (Is Savi dead? Did Karen get shot?) we couldn’t be more excited for the season 2 premiere. This is guilty pleasure TV at it’s very best, so let’s jump right into the premiere and see if season 2 delivers.

We catch up with the ladies 8 months after all of the drama last season and Karen is alive and well, but Sam… well he didn’t make it. April is dating again, but no one is really making much of a connection with her. Savi is of course alive (not much of a show without her) and done physical rehabilitation (as well as 6 surgeries). Joss is starting her own business as a party planer and it’s a struggle.

Savi: Harry and Savi are selling the house, Harry has sold the restaurant and the baby didn’t make it, but despite the hardships Savi is doing well. Did you think that Savi was going to end up with Harry? Think again, she’s seeing Dominic and things look to be going well, but when Savi sees that Harry is dating the hostesses from his old restaurant (Kira) she is a little thrown off. To make matters worse, Savi decides to come back to the law firm and learns that the woman working closely with Dominic is a bombshell.

Joss: Now that she isn’t in real estate, Joss has started her her own party planning business and while some business is coming in, she’s still finding her footing. Harry offers his chef services to Joss for her new business, but she feels that because of the drama between him and Savi that it’s a bad idea. After talking to Savi, Joss feels better about hiring Harry as her caterer.

April: Her creative bug has hit and even though business is booming with her shop, she wants more, so she gathers the ladies and heads to an art show to get inspiration. Instead she meets a sexy artist named Daniel that she makes a connection with and she finds her artistic mojo.

Karen: Is working at the hospital in ER now and has no interest in going back to a private practice, but when she meets a patient that wants her as her therapist she realizes that she’s having a hard time giving it up. Karen decides to open up a private practice again and asks the patient to be her first client.

Last season the ladies had more of their own stories that were rich and layered with drama. This season the show seems to be taking on more of a “Sex and the City” vibe (they even referenced Lena Dunham and “Girls), and we wish it would go back to what they were doing last season. The writing for “Mistresses” just isn’t strong enough to be the next “Sex and the City” or “Girls”, but what they lack in clever writing, they make up for in drama. Episode grade: C
