Conan O’Brien, Joel McHale, CBS rumors, and ‘Community’ season 6 implications
Before we dive to much into this story, one of the things above in the title is not like the others, and that thing is Conan O’Brien! Despite all the rumors constantly about him going elsewhere, TBS has shown a major vote of confidence to the host / comic genius in renewing his contract until 2018. This is one of the longest deals that any host out there has right now.
In a statement confirming the news, Turner programming head Michael Wright touted this as a major victory to keep a loyal host around:
“Conan has not only brought an incredibly young audience to TBS but has also created a digital presence that draws millions of fans to his unique brand of comedy … In addition, Conan has taken his show on the road for memorable weeks in New York, Atlanta and last month in Dallas, and will be breaking new ground next year when Conan becomes the first late-night show to tape at Comic-Con.”
In other news … Is CBS trolling us about Joel McHale becoming the new host of “The Late Late Show”? A photo on the Twitter account of Julie Chen showing her with the “Community” actor and Les Moonves certainly suggests that this is a possibility. Joel has the background and the resume to host a new show after years on “The Soup,” though if he does pick up this job, it would basically mean that if “Community” is picked up for another season somewhere, it would need to film before next year. That’s when Joel would start this job if hired.
Dan Harmon recently said that he would support efforts to find “Community” a home, but there is still much work to be done.
