‘The Blacklist’ season 1, episode 21 review: Who is ‘Berlin,’ Reddington and Liz Keen together?

The Blacklist logo any seasonFor most of the early portion of Monday night’s episode of “The Blacklist” entitled “Berlin,” we saw a side of Elizabeth Keen that was much more vulnerable than what we’ve had much of the past several weeks. To be fair, though, we completely understood it. Her husband Tom was a lie, and Raymond Reddington did not turn out to be the guy Liz thought he was. After all, he was responsible for killing her adopted father.

She was understandably very reluctant to work with Red moving forward, but in a way, she may be happy that she is now that she has figured out almost everything about Reddington’s endgame. The people on the Blacklist may actually be related … or most of them. They all may be a way to stop various people linked to a larger enemy, and that person wants Reddington dead. All this time, Reddington may have been operating out of fear out of all things.

One of the final scenes of this episode was incredible, as we witnessed Reddington tell an epic story of a near-death experience on an island, and how he feels getting back together with Liz again. With the crashing of a plane, and with the knowledge that “Berlin” is actually a person rather than a place, it feels like we understand where these two fit into the world. They may hate each other, but at the same time, they are stuck with each other. This is what made “Berlin” an absolutely great episode, which will set the stage perfectly for an epic finale. Grade: A-.
