‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Was Stefon, Seth Meyers’ farewell worth watching again?

SNL -Sometimes, “Saturday Night Live” has episodes that you just can’t go home again by watching them, and the one hosted by Melissa McCarthy from earlier this season is one of them.

The last time that we saw McCarthy host the show, it had the luxury of being the pre-Super Bowl show, where there was so much in the needs and also a chance to say goodbye to Seth Meyers as he prepared to head over to his late-night show. Now, most of that stuff qualifies as old news, and it’s harder for “SNL” to find its footing when it doesn’t have the same level of relevance going for it. It’s also weird now dipping back into the Meyers era and seeing him at the “Weekend Update” desk again. We’re happy for him and his new show, but it makes us wish he never left.

Still a hit – Women’s group. We enjoy this sketch for some reason just as much upon repeat viewing. McCarthy is great at playing these psychotic characters, and we prefer this one much more than Sheila. If she hosts again (which seems inevitable at this point), this would be a nice inclusion to the rotation.

Still a miss – That art exhibit sketch is an unfunny disaster of a few minutes. Most of the weaker sketches still had some redeeming qualities on the night, but this one had literally nada.

Still emotional – Seth’s farewell. It’s really not that funny (save for the Stefon bits) as it was the first time that we saw it, but there is a ton of nostalgia here, including both Bill Hader and Amy Poehler. We still have no idea why that Fred Armisen thing at the end happened, and we still wish that it didn’t.
