TNT’s ‘Dallas’ season 3, episode 8 reaction: A fire burns bright

Before we start discussing some of the major shockers that happened during the midseason finale “Dallas” Monday night, we have to start things off with what we feel like at this point is an obligatory shaking of the finger to TNT: Why in the world would you continue airing this show on Monday nights? This is an awful timeslot, and the ratings are an indication that not everyone is able to find it live this time of year. Personally, we’d love to see the show moved to either Fridays or Saturdays (where the competition is far less), but we may be in the minority there.

In going to the episode itself, the first half of season 3 ended with some events that will certainly qualify as shockers of the most dramatic variety. For one, Southfork Ranch is burning! The residence was on fire in the closing minutes, and with Sue Ellen somewhere inside it. There are all sorts of theories as to who did this and why, but you have to put “because people hate John Ross” somewhere high on the list. Just look at the stuff he’s been up to!

At this point, we don’t really even feel like we’re supposed to think this guy can be redeemed. He can’t. Every series needs a villain, and this one just happens to be one of the primary characters. John Ross also had a three-way with Pamela and Emma, which is probably the most ridiculous thing we’ve seen all season and firmly qualifies in “this makes no sense” territory. Not only would someone not do that in this situation, but who would have underwear that would correspond that well visually?

The moment was cut short, anyway, by Pamela suffering a seizure, and while we know that she pulls through, it ends the first part of this season off in a pretty strange place where you see her being self-destructive, and you know that there will be chaos in the summer when the show returns.
