‘America’s Got Talent’ reveals format change; Howard Stern, judges can ‘save’ act

“America’s Got Talent” is a show that has, by and large, stayed under the radar of getting huge headlines despite its ratings. It’s basically the “CSI” of reality shows in that every year, it comes out, does its thing, and then disappears again until another season eventually rolls around. Very little ever changes, or breaks the mold enough to actually get you excited beyond the occasional Kenichi Ebina or other wonderful act.

Well, here is the good news about this summer: There is actually a change to how the judges will do things! At a press event today, it was revealed that for the first time, each judge will have a golden buzzer that they can push once a season that has a special power. What does it do? Like the “save” on “American Idol,” it can be used in order for a coach to ensure that a contestant they believe in gets another chance.

This is a nice little twist that actually gets the judges more involved, and we like that idea. With all this being said, is there really going to be an act worth saving if three out of the four judges hate it? We have a hard time believing so. This is a little bit different than the “American Idol” public getting wrong a vote because they forgot to call in, or “The Voice,” where you only have to turn if you are in love with what you are hearing.

Still, at least the show is trying something. Now if they could get rid of the horrendous amount of product placement and actually let Nick Cannon do something beyond read from the worst-written script in existence, the show would be in good shape.
