‘The Mentalist’ season 6, episode 14 review: What happened to Van Pelt?
Tonight, “The Mentalist” aired an episode in “Grey Water” that managed to bring quite a bit to the table. There was an interesting Patrick Jane mystery at the center of it, the return of Rigsby and Van Pelt (yet again), and also the continuation of the biggest storyline that we have had since the Red John case was over.
Of course, all of this ended with a conclusion that is only appropriate when it comes to this show: Van Pelt seemingly being kidnapped in the closing minutes of the episode. Does this raise the stakes for the story? You can say that and then some. Right when it started to seem like some of the pieces were coming together, something like this enters the picture and blows everything up.
The overall events of this particular story matter to us so much more than anything else that Patrick Jane went through in this hour, and that is why “Grey Water” actually reminds us of one of the early season 6 episodes. There was a part of the story that it was hard to care about at all, and then, there was a part of the story that we were completely fascinated by.
Where do we feel like this story is going to go from here? What we know for the time being is that Rigsby and Van Pelt are leaving the show somehow, and if this a way to set up their exit, we only hope that it is a happy one that allows them to go off together without worry. While we know there is a reason to be afraid now, that fear will hopefully not last forever. Grade: B-.
