‘Glee’ season 5, episode 11 review: Did New Directions win Nationals again?
“Glee” is getting set next week to celebrate 100 episodes, but tonight, there was another goal in mind: Trying to ensure that many of the stories at McKinley High were coming closer to some sort of natural conclusion.
So what did the show try its best to do with “City of Angels”? Tell the story of Nationals, and do so effectively. In some ways, there were parts of this that really worked. Seeing Sam because a leader was fun, mostly because there were parts of this that were not exactly perfect in any shape or form.
Most of the competition part of this was very well-produced, but also repetitive in the same way that many things on this show are. There are only so many times that you are going to hear a competition like this without it feeling like the same thing you’ve seen so many times before.
The only real problem with much of the entire Nationals competition was just that so much of it had been spoiled before the show. Thanks to scoop on the 100th episode, everyone knew already that New Directions did not come out of Nationals victorious, and were really going back to the drawing board because of it. And by that, we mean that the students all need to have other hobbies. Despite Sue Sylvester having a little bit of sadness over doing so, she had to cut the club so that the money could go to other important parts of the school. It’s a sad reality of public education, and Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison played the scene well.
This is why we feel like “City of Angels” did all it could given the material that it had. The biggest issue it suffered from was just predictability, and not being able to devote enough time to any of the characters who need a resolution before the show shifts more to New York City. Grade: B-.
