‘Call the Midwife’ season 4 spoilers: The road ahead without Jessica Raine’s Jenny Lee

Is Jessica Raine set to take a bow on “Call the Midwife”? We are going to find out an answer to that shortly, but early implications are that it is true, and the show is going to be heading in a very different direction moving forward.

Thanks to this news, though, there are of course a number of interesting questions. After all, most of the show has been narrated from the perspective of an older version of the Jenny character, and the show may have to adjust its very format in order to better accommodate the change. It was already hard enough this season to think that Jenny would know finer details about what happened at Nonnatus House when she was away, so trying to think that she would have anything else in her mind seems impossible.

For now, here is what we can tell you about what will be the fourth season of the show:

1. The episode order seems to be just about the same, and the show will air on the BBC at some point in early 2015. Many of the other cast members will likely remain on board.

2. When it comes to the time period, don’t be surprised if the show takes some sort of great leap forward to the 1960s after spending most of its run so far in the ’50s. There is not necessarily any need for the show to stay there, but we also have no particular interest in seeing what these characters are up to during the age of disco. We wouldn’t want the show to ever go beyond around 1968.

3. Expect a ton of effort to be placed on refocusing the show, and don’t be surprised to get a fifth season to go along with the fourth. There is going to be a hard-pressed interest to show that there is more to this show than just one character.
