‘American Idol XIII’ preview: Wonder Mike’s daughter Carmen Delgina auditions
What is it with all the relatives of famous people on singing-show these days? We’ve seen a ton of this on “The Voice” UK this year, and on “The Voice” here in America last fall we had Kaley Cuoco’s sister Briana.
Now, we turn to Carmen Delgina on “American Idol,” the daughter of famed Sugar Hill Gang member Wonder Mike. Couldn’t she have used some of her connections to him to find fame? Possibly, but it would have been more of an extension of his career rather than something that she really sought out and succeeded at getting on her own. With that being said, though, we still find it kind of annoying that this is basically the first thing that Keith Urban asks her about in the audition room. (Make no mistake: He was prompted by someone to ask about this.)
When it comes to her actual voice, here is the issue: She’s good, but she’s not great. It feels like she’s lacking a little confidence in her talent, and she could’ve pushed more in this audition and really wow the judges with how big of a contender that she is. There are some lovely notes in here, though, and we do love “Tainted Love” as a song choice. So if we were one of the judges, we’d say “yes” to her for the time being (after we used some of that judge money to buy mansion, of course). While it’s not clear if she can make it all the way to the live rounds, there is at least enough talent here that with the right advice handed, she could get better and improve throughout the season. There’s nothing about her that suggests that she is not worth the show.
