‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 6 finale: Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Kurt Sutter respond to shocker
After tonight’s emotional, painful finale for “Sons of Anarchy,” we were ultimately left to try and pick up the pieces of what happened. (Warning, spoilers ahead).
This episode was entitled “A Mother’s Work,” and it was appropriate (and horrible) that Gemma was the person to kill Tara at the tail end of the episode, which Juice then tried to take the fall for to ensure that her name was clear.
Both Katey Sagal and Maggie Siff appeared on “Anarchy Afterword” after the show alongside Kurt Sutter, and he started off the aftershow by detailing first of all when he first had the idea to kill off the Tara character. As you would expect, this was something a long time coming:
“I knew early on in the series that I wanted Tara’s death to happen at the end of season 6 … Jax needed that life-altering event to [change the series] forever. As difficult as it was, I knew it had to happen.”
As for Katey, she tried to describe some of the emotions that went through her head while filming it, and the struggle to differentiate her feelings from those of Gemma’s:
“It was a lot of things. It was scary and heartbreaking. As the years have gone by … In Gemma’s mind it was a justified act. It was really a rageful moment, but leading up to it she believes that [Tara has destroyed her life].”
Finally, we turn to Maggie. She claimed that Kurt informed her of her character’s fate early on in the season courtesy of a sit-down meeting. She also explained what it was basically like having to lie there after her character died:
“In terms of performing … The hardest thing for me was having to lie there and live through Katey … and having an [emotional] response to [her and Charlie Hunnam].”
As for one interesting moment for one of the actors, Katey admitted to crying while watching the entire episode, mostly because it was so difficult to see herself do something to a woman who she cares for so much in real life.
