‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Does Kerry Washington show, ‘The Fox’ spoof, Eminem hold up?
In case you’ve missed some of our re-watch articles in the past, what we try to do is look at the show and figure out what sketches are still funny and relevant, what we may have overrated upon first viewing, and what deserves a little bit more credit than we may have first handed out.
Still a hit -Aside from Eminem still being a solid musical guest, the best sketch of the night still is without a doubt “What Does My Girl Say?”. It’s possible that someday “The Fox” will be completely irrelevant (think next year), but for now, this spoof song is still out there and this idea doesn’t feel any more dated than it first did. While this musical relies heavily on stereotypes, we can’t be too negative about it when they are this funny.
From hit to miss – Heshi. We gave this Nasim Pedrad character a little more leeway upon first viewing, mostly because some of the humor came from not knowing what would happen next. The jokes weren’t actually that funny, and in watching it back with the knowledge of where the sketch goes, there was nary a laugh in here.
From miss to hit – While it’s still not the funniest sketch we’ve ever seen, the Miss Universe sketch is one that has such an odd array of characters and impressions in it that it really does hold up pretty well. Plus, Kerry single-handedly wins the entire sketch courtesy of just a few simple phrases that she repeats time and time again.
