NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5 spoilers: First photo, details on Walton Goggins role
If “Community” was looking somehow for a way to make us love it even more, we figure that they succeeded when they casted Walton Goggins for an upcoming guest spot on January 16. The actor, best known for his work on “Justified,” made another recent scene-stealing turn recently as Venus Van Dam on “Sons of Anarchy,” and he’s now getting ready to venture more into the comedy world.
What is particularly delightful about his appearance here is that he is playing a part that not only brings something new to the show, but also is a reminder that Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase) was once a big part of the cast. Goggins plays Mr. Stone, an investigator with ties to Pierce that administers a lie-detector test to all of the members of the study group.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly (who first posted the attached image to the left) about this part, Goggins had the following to say:
“I come with scathing criticism and an offer that even Boyd Crowder couldn’t refuse. It’s really an opportunity for this group of characters that we’ve all grown to love to really look at themselves and to take a moment to reflect on who they are in this world. I don’t think people will view this show the same way afterward — because of the things that are said and because of what the characters say about themselves. And it does it in a way that only Community can do. It does it with biting humor and a real understanding of smart people understanding themselves. And it’s very touching in the way that it wraps up without telling you how it all unfolds.”
Does this sound fun to anyone else? Goggins says that he really enjoyed this role, and would love to do some more work on another comedy in the future such as “The Big Bang Theory.” No offense to Sheldon Cooper and company, but we really don’t think that they need any more help in the ratings right now. We’ll take Goggins hopefully giving “Community” a bump for now. They certainly need it, especially when you consider that the rest of the network’s comedy ratings are so awful, it could actually have a shot of being renewed.
