‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ review: Janine Booth, Patty Vega do battle

Following Wednesday night’s all-new “Top Chef” episode, we were of course eager to see what unfolded on “Last Chance Kitchen” given the quality of contestants that were there. Patty Vega was not one of those eliminated chefs who seemed to just be struggling with anything and everything when it comes to being a good chef; her biggest flaw was more along the lines of now being able to bring all of the components of her dish together in time to make them successful. There is so much that goes into being a good chef, and sometimes a few elements here and there can fall short.

Patty’s competition on this episode was someone in Janine Booth who, unfortunately for her, has been a titan in the kitchen ever since she first arrived there. She started strong almost straight out of the gate with some quality dishes, and has looked ever since like someone who did not deserve to be eliminated in the slightest.

Well, does she still look that way now? Almost without hesitation. Janine continues to dominate this competition, with much of the reason for it being that she is simply finding a way to handle all of the twists that were thrown at her. While she came a little close in this onion-themed challenge of a rule violation (she almost started to prep more after her knives were taken from her), she still managed to pull out in front. The frustrating thing once again here for Patty is that she went home thanks to one simple mistake: Too much salt.

The biggest bummer with this episode in the end was just the overall feeling of predictability that it brought with it. It felt obvious almost from the first moment that Janine was going to win still, and there was really a ton of trash-talking to keep it entertaining. On a different note, we have to dock this grade even further thanks to the inundation of ads that Bravo is putting online. Can’t we just have one ad, and then that is it? Grade: C-.
