The CW’s ‘Reign,’ ‘The Originals,’ and ‘The Tomorrow People’ picked up for full seasons
Odds are, you saw the following news coming based on some of the early results that were out there, and it is now official: The CW has commissioned full seasons of “Reign,” “The Originals,” and “The Tomorrow People.” These are shows that got off to solid starts in the ratings, and really did just enough to merit getting a little bit more of an opportunity. Of course, by that we simply mean that they did not completely fall apart on the schedule.
These renewals means that all three series will be picked up for 22 episodes at least, and it could keep them on the air until around the start of May depending on what the scheduling department decides to do with them. While this news is indeed great, though, there are still at least some other factors that you do have to consider here. For example, where is new series “Star-Crossed,” which seems to be some sort of alien / human romance a la “Romeo & Juliet” (or “Mass Effect,” minus what makes it cool), going to land now? There were no bombs for it to replace.
Now while these series are all going to be around for at least a little while, “The Originals” is the only one right now that we can say is probably going to be around for a second season. While it is not a smash hit in the way that “Arrow” was early last season, it did at least get off to a good start, and has hovered around a 1.0 rating. On a night that also contains “Supernatural,” these two shows have given The CW three nights a week this year that actually have solid numbers by their standards. Two years ago, they really were just reliant on “The Vampire Diaries” and not a whole lot else.
The test for “The Tomorrow People” and “Reign” is going to come in the spring, when the weather / temptation to go outside will be there more and more. This is where “The Secret Circle” fell apart and where other shows tend to lose steam. If the ratings stay steady, they both should return … but we would give the edge to “Tomorrow People” right now since “Reign” is losing a ton of its lead-in from Nina Dobrev and company.
