NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5 spoilers: David Cross joins, will spend time with Jonathan Banks
David Cross now has a new TV home for at least one half-hour, and it just so happens to be on a show that he has long been a major proponent of: “Community.” According to Vulture, the former “Arrested Development” actor and possible comic genius will be appearing in a glorious follow-up to the 2011 classic “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons” episode, and will be playing a part that has a connection to another one of the show’s recurring guest stars this year.
Specifically, Cross’ character is Hank Hickey, the estranged son of the “Breaking Bad” star’s Professor Hickey on the show. Who knows? Maybe this character is an avid fan of Dungeons & Dragons, and the thought of the study group playing the game again is enough to get him back on board the show.
This is going to be a difficult episode to film a follow-up to in some ways. Part of the genius of the first installment was that it was actually one of the better showcases for Chevy Chase’s character of Pierce Hawthorne. There had to be someone there that was willing to wreck and sabotage all of the whimsy, and he was that guy. Then again, we also have a ton of faith in the writers to come up with something else great, and they would not be creating a new version of the episode if they did not have a good idea. Just look at the sequel to the paintball episode for some proof of that, which was glorious and strange for a number of different reasons (including the presence of Josh Holloway in one of the more random guest-starring roles ever).
There is another interesting connection between David Cross in Dan Harmon, as the showrunner had a brief cameo in this past “Arrested Development” season. Meanwhile, Mitch Hurwitz is slated to appear this year on “Community” along with another creator in “Breaking Bad’s” Vince Gilligan. “Community” has just built themselves an army of great guests this year, including some returning favorites such as Brie Larson (one of the few good parts of season) and also John Oliver.
