‘The Simpsons’ season 25: Latest couch opening brilliantly spoofs ‘The Hobbit’
While we know that it is easy to sit around and argue whether or not “The Simpsons” has lost a step when it comes to the quality of their episodes as a whole (mostly because this is something that has been debated now for a good 15 years), we still find their couch-gag openings to be as brilliant and hilarious as ever.
Take, for example, the latest one from the upcoming “4 Regrettings and a Funeral” that is a pretty perfect send-up of “The Hobbit,” complete with walking, walking, and more walking. This is one of those movies that we and a ton of other people love, but then you have to sit there and question at times why you like it. It’s one of those projects where you really just think you are supposed to like it, and you do despite the fact that there is about a good hour of it that really doesn’t need to be there.
But in addition to being a brilliant send-up of the things that “The Hobbit” and any Peter Jackson film does wrong, this video also does a good job of profiling just what the movie does right: Creating an impressive visual spectacle. You can see some brilliant vistas (even for animation), and the effects here are about as strong as we have seen on the televised cartoon. Even the cartoon Smaug was pretty cool, and there was an entertaining way that most “Simpsons” characters were introduced into this universe.
There is also another interesting connection here between Guillermo del Toro and this introduction. The “Pacific Rim” director was the brilliant mind behind one of the “Simpsons” openings this season, and he was also the original director behind the “Hobbit” trilogy before dropping out and allowing Jackson to take on this gig himself.
What do you think about this opening for the show: A brilliant send-up of the movie, or just merely okay compared to the others? Also, do you think that the show is almost relying too much on these gags at this point to compensate for the rest of the show?
