‘The Tomorrow People’ episode 3 review: Did this story suddenly become super?

The Tomorrow People -Over the first two episodes of the season, “The Tomorrow People” was our favorite whipping boy of the fall schedule. It just wasn’t good; the writing was cheesy, the casting was way off, and it just felt like everything was a story completely by the numbers.

Well, we’re not here to say that the show has suddenly sprouted the ability to be awesome overnight. With that being said, it is probably still the best episode of the show by a good margin, since we at least had an interesting story where Stephen was struggling to figure out whether or not he was going to use his powers to stop a suicidal student from killing herself. It was one of the first few genuine ethical dilemmas for the show, and we appreciated seeing that tackled rather than something silly like obvious “we’re going to hook up” tension between Stephen and Cara.

Granted, there is still plenty of that tension here, especially since Cara ended up saving the suicidal woman to keep Stephen’s identity safe, and this is after Stephen used his time-stopping ability as a way to get her out of Ultra. We wish that this organization was not the typical villainous organization that we have seen on a dozen of other shows.

What the show at least did right this time was giving us some of Cara’s backstory, and proving that there is something relatively intriguing about her story. But, the show needs to really make things a little less obvious, and dial back on the “this is obviously a CW show” feeling. There were moments where some serious geek cred is starting to come out. Embrace that, give us a little more explanation about the powers, and a little less focus spent on being over-dramatic. There could be a show here still. Grade: C.
