‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ gets full season, will join ‘New Girl’ for post-Super Bowl airing
Is “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” about to explode to the next level? Fox at least realizes that they have a gem of a comedy on their hands here, and they are giving it almost every opportunity possible to succeed.
Today, the network confirmed that they are doing more than just giving the Andy Samberg cop series a full season; they are also pairing it with “New Girl” for a super-sized comedy block that will air following the Super Bowl in February. While this may be a risky decision, we would personally love it if “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” went first. This is not a slam on “New Girl” by any means, but the police show seems like a better fit inherently with the mostly-male audience checking out the football game. “New Girl” does work pretty well when you actually watch the show, but we think that some people out there will probably just take the show at face value and walk away.
Speaking about this glorious news, Fox programming head Kevin Reilly recognized that indeed, his show is beyond amazing:
“It’s exciting to see that both critics and fans love Brooklyn Nine-Nine as much as we do. With Andy and Andre out in front of this incredible ensemble, it feels like this show is going to be around for a long time.”
The person that we are probably the happiest for right now is the incredible Andre Braugher, who has seen so many of his projects be tossed away over the years that he really deserved to get a hit on the air. This is that hit, and if the audience finds it and realizes just how funny it is, they would stick around. The only thing that has really held the show back to this point is a terrible timeslot against “Agents of SHIELD,” “NCIS,” and most of the time “The Voice.” We’ve said for weeks that it needs to be swapped with “The Mindy Project,” a show that is seemingly going nowhere ratings-wise, and put at 9:30 after “New Girl” where it can stand more on its own.
This news follows the recent announcement that there were more scripts ordered for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and it is a busy week for fall TV in general. NBC has canceled “Ironside” and “Welcome to the Family,” while CBS ordered a full season of “The Millers,” “The Crazy Ones,” and “Mom.”
