‘Masters of Sex’ episode 2 receives ratings bump, already increases season 2 odds
Now in its second week, “Masters of Sex” is clearly working to prove in the ratings that it is no “Low Winter Sun,” at least when it comes to bombing in the ratings following a good performance from its lead-in.
In its second week on the air, the Michael Sheen – Lizzie Caplan period drama improved on its premiere numbers, and went up 100,000 viewers to 1.1 million. That is certainly strong for a new series on this premium cable channel, and it shows that most who liked the pilot enjoyed what they saw and stuck around. There are some other factors here to consider that Showtime will use to make their decision on an early renewal, which are far and away different than what any other channel does:
1. While live viewing is always appreciated, it’s not necessary for a network with no commercials. Showtime is heavily time-shifted, and the show will likely pick up a much larger chunk of viewers throughout the week.
2. While it may look like “Masters of Sex” gained viewers, remember that the series had its pilot online for weeks prior to the premiere. Many impatient subscribers likely dived in to that early.
At this point, we do imagine that a season 2 for the series is inevitable, given both the ratings and the positive reviews that are coming in; as a matter of fact, we don’t even expect them to wait too long before announcing a renewal. Like with a fellow network in HBO, Showtime likes decide quickly with what they want to do with their shows. If there is not a renewal by the midway point of the season, we will be stunned more than a provost finding out that a prestigious doctor is working out of a brothel.
What do you think: Should “Masters of Sex” be renewed sooner rather than later? We want to hear some of your thoughts below! Meanwhile, click here if you just so happened to miss our full review of the episode last night.
