‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 spoilers: One change in filming structure

While the following bit of “Game of Thrones” news may not be particularly notable for some of you out there who enjoy reading about the casting or production side of things, we imagine that those of you who love hearing about technical stuff or behind-the-scenes details will be rather interested in the filming crew structure for the year.

For more on that, we turn to the on-set guru and assistant to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (the two showrunners for the series) in Cat Taylor, who also crafts the Making of “Game of Thrones” blog for HBO. If you remember last year, there were three separate units that were at one time hard at work on making sure some scenes were filmed perfectly at different times of year. However, the small changes this time around are just two:

“The cameras are now rolling for Season 4 of ‘Game of Thrones’! There are some differences to filming this year. We’ll be sticking to two units, Wolf and Dragon (with the occasional splinter cell coming into play). We started in Iceland early this year, rather than in the depth of November’s six-hour shoot days. We’re in Croatia and Ireland now, as you might have heard.”

One of the simple reasons for two crews this year may just mean a different set of filming demands. The Iceland crew was not forced to suffer nearly as much this year as they have been in the past, for one, and there are also not as many incidents this time of footage from multiple different countries being shot concurrently. At most, we only have two going at the same time (which is not too bad at all for the show).
