‘Downton Abbey’ season 4, episode 3 preview: Mary’s new love interest Lord Gillingham arrives
Next week on “Downton Abbey,” a massive party is going to be had at the estate. However, it is the events that take place during this that will perhaps be more important in the end than the actual party itself (which does come complete with an opera singer).
First of all, we have the arrival on the show of Lord Anthony Gillingham (Tom Cullen), a man from Lady Mary’s past who resurfaces at the event … and the two even spend a little bit of time together. Is there a potential romance between the two taking place in the near future? We are certainly not going to say that this is happening next week, the option may be there for the rest of the season. This story will be a slow build, and it may be the end of the season before we know just what happens with it.
As for some other events, there will be drama in the servants’ quarters, and the sort of mayhem will come out of it that you traditionally see on such occasions. Carson gets offended, and tries to sort some of it out, but little does he know all that is going on here. Anna has become the target of a devious plot, and one that is far from over yet thanks to Thomas. We wonder what his endgame is sometimes, but we ultimately estimate that it is largely just the result of him being bored. There is little else for a man in his position (and one who cannot express himself properly) to do, so why not just stir the pot?
