‘American Idol’ season 13: Fun from Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban in Austin

At the end of the day, we know that “American Idol” is always going to be about the singers first and foremost. If you come up with a poor crop of talent, your season is probably going to end up being garbage. However, getting yourself some good judges can at least help you to mask the fact that you may not have a winner that sells an crazy amount of records. (It’s worked wonders in two seasons of “The Voice,” even if you call them “coaches.”)

The more that we are seeing of the “American Idol” judging panel this year in action, the more we actually think that this is the best chemistry that a group has had on the show since maybe season 7. Look at it this way: Four judges hasn’t worked any time that they have gone to it, and Steven Tyler was so useless at times in his two seasons as he, Jennifer Lopez, and Randy Jackson just didn’t mesh. Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban mellow out J.Lo a little, and help her to show off more of her fun side.

The video segment below from a Fox station in Austin (where auditions were recently shot) is promising, and a major step in the right direction when it comes to getting the chemistry right. With that being said, it’s hardly a guarantee people are going to watch. With the ratings down for “The X Factor” this year, they could plummet this year regardless of who the judges are. The biggest hope that they have is that the show is so good, people will end up coming back later.
