‘Dexter’ season 8, episode 12 review: The series finale, and the biggest monster of all
We’ve waiting for years to find out just how “Dexter” was going to end on Showtime, and we had plenty of reasons to be doubtful that this was going to end well. The past few episodes have been at times a mess, and there was just so much going on that really needed some sort of resolution here. Was there really enough time for the series to actually turn all this around?
At the end of the day, we feel as though we are writing this of mixed mind. There were are some things that the series did extraordinarily well, and then there were things that we still don’t understand. First of all, why didn’t Hannah at least try to disguise her appearance, and why did Dexter continue to refer to her by name in public places? It’s amazing the things that people were able to really get away with in this episode just for the sake of making the story work.
But at the same time, there were moments that were touching. How could you not tear up when watching Dexter throw his own sister Deb over the Slice of Life after she died from complications of the gunshot, or cheer when he finally killed Oliver Saxon, only to later get away with it by convincing his co-workers that it was an act of self-defense? These were the moments that really felt much like the “Dexter” that we came to know and love over the years.
But, above all, we have to talk about the ending. Dexter lived! But, he faked his own death in the process. After realizing that he ruined the lives of all those around him, he decided to fake his own death by driving the boat out into the ocean; then, we had a final scene of him working somewhere as a logger sporting a thick beard, a sign that he was not willing to give up on his own life. Hannah was alive in Argentina with his child Harrison, which is probably where the spin-off rumors come from now. But it was a strange hour in a way given that Masuka, a character since the very beginning, was completely a ghost for the hour, and Jamie Batista was as well despite her feelings for Harrison as a caretaker. It felt almost like the show was rushed to get into an hour, and we did not have the closure we wanted or needed with most of the characters. Heck, it wasn’t even closure at all. We thought for a second that the last scene was going to be Hannah in Argentina, and that would have been infuriating.
This was not the ending that we had dreamed of a few seasons ago, but it’s the ending in a post-season 6 world: Disappointing and a little muddled, even though there were still moments. We did tear up once and we like the concept of Dexter still remaining a step ahead of the world in the end, but it left us wanting perhaps a little too much more. While Michael C. Hall was perhaps rather muted, the best performance of the whole hour came in Desmond Harrington, who played the pain of Quinn almost perfectly.
So goodbye, Dexter; while we wish there was something more in your final send-off, we will still miss you greatly.
Overall, what did you think about the “Dexter” series finale? Be sure to share your thoughts with a comment below! Stay tuned, as we will have more reaction soon.

A very disappointing ending…to abandon his son Harrison who he doted on to work in a lumber camp ? To abandon a beautiful girl like Hannah who loved him for a life of isolation ? I would have thought a recovered Deb finally having a relationship with Quinn would have been a far better …..
I live in a hurricane prone area . and to fake his death was a good idea but the way it was done defies belief….maybe a whale swallowed him and spat him out on the beach.

The ending was most disappoining. Every1 had great suggestions for alternate endings. For 1 why couldn’t he be happy with Hannah ? Or why didn’t he die with deb. I’m so mad, i loved every episode .fr day 1 except this. Deb could die but then he meets Hannah so that could b the bitter-sweet, instead everything was just bitter. Major fail!!!!!

I was fine with it. The series has been slipping anyway and no one would have been happy with any ending. Plus it leaves it open for Dexter to return!

There were SO many possibilities for the finale that would have been worthy of the word “finale”. One, of course, being they all live happily ever after and Dexter is able to lead a normal life and give up his dark passenger. That scenario being for closures sake. Or for an ominous open ending, which they were trying to accomplish, that would be fitting for a dark drama. Dexter could have been killed by the Brain Surgeon while Harrison fearfully witnesses while hiding somewhere which then makes him “born in blood”.

The movie will convince the finale
The storm washed him to the shores to live a life… is he the same or is he changed into a normal person… the nicest thing about the series is DEXTER hailed as a perfect psychopath designd by harry’s code. He was never caught not even in the end.

That end was crap! The writers had all the tools and they blew it! Ok fans you ready, this is what really happened, (deb gets shot as is, but like it was said, by a miracle, no vital organs so no death. Saxon gets caught at the hospital just like it happened. Dex pays one more visit to deb, kiss and hug, mean while Hanna runs into bounty hunter on bus, deals with as she did, camera flash forward to a months later dex watchs Saxon get the chair, law wins, deb comes out of the hospital in a wheel chair with dex pushing, obviously not mortally wounded but still recovering. Quinn takes over rides deb home with one more hug from deb for dex. Next scene is dex meeting Hannah and Harrison on some beach in Argentina. One final word from dexter “I don’t know what the future holds for me. Am I cured of my dark passenger? Only time will tell. All I know is I’m happy now. Perhaps there is hope for a monster after all…….”

I loved the ending. Batista and Quinn allowing that Dexter killed Oliver Saxon in ‘self-defense’ just showed how Harry’s code applies to everyone. If he was bad, he deserved to die, but only Dexter had the cajones to handle the deed. Killing Deb and giving her to the ocean was like a tribute demanded by his demons. Just sobbed throughout

I was expecting something great tonight. I was thinking this final episode was going to rock my world. While watching the promo for this episode I was reliving how I felt at the end of season 5 with Rita’s death. I was so pumped to ride the emotional roller coaster and I have to say this finale episode fell very short of everything I was hoping for… So disappointed that it all had to end in this fashion. I will miss dexter and I’ll always think of how short this last episode fell

What would be cool is that Debra’s death was faked as well as Dexter’s in season 8 finale. This would be a great twist to revive a season 9. By Debra and Dexter having a new identity, they can put the past behind them…or is it possible? Can Dexter resist killing. Will history repeat itself. Does he create more drama for the people that love him in his life (Debra, Harrison, Hanna, etc.). There are so many opinions for writers to come up with new material in order to revive the show. Please keep the good shows going. Reality shows are dominating TV and they SUCK SO BAD!!! Of course they are cheap to make, but where is quality TV these days? Hello writers out there, please turn this awful trend around and get rid of reality TV shows.

I’m usually not one of those fanboys who hates every ending of everything TV show but gosh this wasn’t too good. He should have gotten the electric chair, much more effective. If not that, he should be dead.. This was silly.

I have been a strong fan since day one and I liked the ending. I agree there are a few things I would have done different, but all in all I was happy with it. I imagine that Dexter intended to die in the storm but fate just didn’t agree, perhaps he washed up on shore to a new feeling of purpose and began this new life without all those ties and drama, a world where he has his social and internal questions all figured out with a new found freedom to operate any way he sees fit… the perfect killer.

I think you’ve got it right, except, in the last shot we see a self exiled survivor with nothing, including his desire/need to kill. He’s just existing, nothing more. Sad, tragic, & fitting.

writers said he didnt try to kill himself, his survival instinct would have been too strong. He faked his death.

That was almost as bad an ending as the Sopranos.
1) Dumping Deb like all his other kills? Stupid. Now, I did think he was going to tie himself to Deb and they both were going to die together in the ocean — that would have been fitting, that he would die with his kills.
2) Driving into a hurricane to kill himself? That would have definitely put it worse than the Sopranos. I get the symbolism — to protect Hannah and Harrison — but that was stupid.
3) Then to show up in a logging camp with a horrible thin beard? So, Dexter was able to swim faster than the hurricane back to shore and tiptoe out of town? Stupid.
Another great series with another horrible ending. But, maybe there will be a comeback in a movie ….. and do it right next time.

Although he did realize he didn’t need Harry anymore a few episodes ago. It would’ve made more sense and a better ending if in the last scene before he looks into the camera he looks over at Harry. Proving that his dark passenger has followed him.

Quinn, Batista and Mathews were all great in the end. Quinn was really surprising.
It was really hard to see Deb die. Her character seemed to have more growth than any other in the series.
The season seemed rushed and not well though out with even more plot holes then usual.
Glad they didn’t kill of Dexter or Hannah so there is a possible return.

I have been watching this show from episode 1 to the end. I can’t tell you how furious I am about how it ended. First of all, he shouldn’t have tried to killed himself. Second of all, he should have stayed dead. And third of all, that last scene killed the whole point, if he pulled out another trophy box it would have been a decent ending, but that was just awful.

very disappointing. i went into this season, after laguerta’s murder at the end of season 7, wanting dexter & deb to get punished. However, season 8 got me nostalgic for the old dex & deb, who were heroes and good guys. The writers got me rooting for them, just to turn around and do what they did to each character. it really pissed me off & i wish things didnt end this way.
