2013 MTV VMAs: Katy Perry closes show with ‘Roar’ at Brooklyn Bridge

In closing the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, we had a performance that was hyped up throughout the night: Katy Perry, performing what was already labeled as the “biggest hit of her career” in “Roar.” She also chose a pretty iconic location in order to perform it in the famed Brooklyn Bridge.

The acoustics were clearly different from the get-go thanks to the outdoor venue, and the entire performance had a boxing theme to it … which cannot be particularly surprising given the lyrical content of the song. There was also a pretty massive crowd assembled for what was just one song.

The only real surprise of this performance came in that on a show that was clearly known throughout the night for costume changes and theatrics, this was actually pretty straightforward. Save for the boxing theme and few different movements around the ring, Katy did not change her outfit or invite any special guests up to the stage. Nor did she need to.

Perhaps the best part of this performance was that in a night that featured many emotional moments, controversy, and even questionable winners at times, it went out on a positive and empowering note with a song that we imagine is going to continue to climb up the charts straight to #1, keeping Katy’s string of success on the Billboard Hot 100 going.
