2013 MTV VMAs: Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, twerking, and teddy bears
We originally did not go into tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards with plans on chronicling so many individual performances … but then this happened. In what had to be one of the strangest things that we will see on TV all year (and we are speaking preemptively here), we had Miley Cyrus gyrating around with teddy bears, playing with a foam finger like it was a phallic object, and also twerking left and right.
There is something about watching the former “Hannah Montana” shake her booty all over the place that was just awkward, especially when you consider that Robin Thicke is a married man, and he was a target during their “duet” of “Blurred Lines.” This was part of a set that also included Miley’s “We Can’t Stop,” which was the part of the performance with teddy bears.
We don’t doubt or dispute that Miley is a great performer, and she certainly seems comfortable with what she is doing now on stage, but this something that we never particularly imagined that we would want to see in regards to her performance vision. This will go down as one of the racier numbers in VMA history, and that is saying a lot for a show that has immersed itself in questionable behavior for as long as we can possibly remember.
If you want to check out some more highlights from the VMAs, including the opening performance from Lady Gaga, just be sure to visit the link here. When there is a video available a little bit later in the evening, we will of course have it for you here.
