2014 Emmys: NBC moves show thanks to ‘Sunday Night Football’
Even though the 2013 Emmys are not going to air still on CBS until September 22, why not present a little bit of scoop now about what the schedule is going to be like for the awards show next year?
After rotating to all of the other networks, the Emmys will be back on NBC in 2014 for the first time since 2010, and the plan for now is for the network to shift the show back once again to August. This comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, which cites the network’s titan “Sunday Night Football” as the reason. Whenever NBC does not host the show, the tradition seems to be to have the show a day before the start of the official fall season on the major networks.
Ultimately, we have to say that we prefer the time in August to the time in September, mostly because it feels strange almost to be watching awards given away for some shows (a la Jonathan Banks in “Breaking Bad”) that are at that point a full year old. There’s also the competition aspect of things. Not only will the Emmys this year face off against the NFL, but there is also the series finale of “Dexter” to watch, along with the second-to-last episode of “Breaking Bad.” While we’re going to have continuous coverage of the show, this is a rare time where there are some other programs worthy of just as much attention given their place in TV history.
Back in 2010, the move of the Emmys to Sunday night did not make much of an impact in the ratings, and Jimmy Fallon presided over one of our favorite shows in history. His “Glee”-themed cold open is easily the best one that we have seen, though Jimmy Kimmel also had a strong start to last year’s show.
